Helpful Questions About the Best Ice Cleats for Transportation and Trucking
Here are the things I personally consider.
- The straps must hug the footwear close enough so that they do not impede movement between the pedals, especially in an emergency.
- The studs should not penetrate the rubber on the pedals, which would, if they did, again impede moving between the pedals.
- The last, and in my mind, a less important consideration, is that the studs do not tear-up the rubber on the pedals.
The absolute safest ice cleats to wear while driving is heel-only ice cleats because there are no straps to get hung up, and there are no studs on the forefoot to stick on to the pedals. The obvious downside is that heel-only ice cleats are less effective and also force you to walk flat-footed to keep the studs contacting the ice. The final decision is really up to the individual or company safety manager.
