Ice Cleats for Delivery Drivers

Ice Cleats Delivery Drivers Can Wear on Indoor Floors and While Driving

You're safer walking indoors on smooth hard surfaces and you won't damage most floors because
  • Winter Walking Transitional Traction Ice Cleats use 1mm tungsten carbide studs that minimally extend beyond the tread.
  • Both the studs and the aggressive tread make contact with the surface.

However, you should not wear them walking on finished wood floors.

Non Ice Covered Sewer Grate Cover You're also safer using Transitional Traction Ice Cleats in cities because they give you better traction stepping on
  • sewer grates;
  • utility hole covers;
  • metal stairs covers;
  • steps and floors around mass transit; and
  • brick, marble, and tiled surfaces.

Heel-Only Ice Cleats

  • Eliminate any possibility that the Ice Cleat straps could in any way impede your ability to react quickly in an emergency while driving. However, that assurance comes with a cost.
  • Do not protect you as well as Full-Sole Ice Cleats. It's important that at least one aggressive stud make contact with the ice to prevent slipping. The more studs penetrating a gripping the ice the better the chance you won't slip. Ask any NASCAR driver. They'll tell you that once you lose traction, it's hard to get it back.
  • Force you to walk more flat-footed, so the studs remain in contact with the ice.

Full-Sole Ice Cleats reduce the risk of ice-related injuries far better than Heel-Only Ice Cleats especially on uneven, "bumpy" ice. If your company doesn't have restrictions regarding Full-Sole shoe attachments while driving, Winter Walking LOW-PRO is your best choice. Here's why.

26 aggressive, durable 1mm Tungsten Carbide studs minimally extend beyond the Ice Cleat's self-cleaning tread making them safer to wear

  • while driving because 1mm studs will not penetrate or grab on to the pedals;
  • inside the Delivery Truck, when stepping on truck running boards, and on most indoor floors. These Ice Grips are safer because of when the driver places weight on the Ice Grip, both the studs and the tread make contact with the ground. (You would not wear them on finished wooden floors.); and
  • lastly, making deliveries in cities where sewer grates, utility hole covers, stone, tile, or brick surfaces are slip and fall hazards for people using ordinary Ice Cleats.

LOW-PRO are practical Ice Cleats Delivery Drivers will use. Furthermore, drivers will be more productive because they'll be able move faster across slippery ground.

Note: Ice Cleats with Transitional Traction provide excellent traction on ice, packed and loose snow, slush, and black ice. However, if you encounter occasional deliveries on steep, icy hills, consider HIGH-PRO Ice Cleats (shown later on this page) in addition to LOW-PRO. HIGH-PRO Ice Grips have even more aggressive 2mm studs. However, you would have to remove them before going indoors. Therefore, you would wear the LOW-PRO Ice Grips throughout the day and use the HIGH-PRO for the worst situations.

Gritted Ice Cleats are

  • for special applications like delivery of flammable gases, liquids, explosives, use in around grain elevators, and in refueling operations;
  • far less effective at preventing slipping on ice than studded Ice Cleats and become even less effective as temperatures drop and ice becomes denser; and
  • the longest-lasting Gritted Ice Cleats because they use self-renewing aluminum oxide bands.

Beware of Ice Cleats that are spark-resistive which means they probably won't spark. Ask the guy handling propane or explosives if "it probably won't cause a spark" is OK.

HEEL GRIPS Ice Cleats Demo Video
Like the LOW-PRO HEEL Ice Cleats, Winter Walking HEEL-GRIPS and completely safe to wear while driving. The difference is that HEEL-GRIPS have 2mm tungsten carbide studs instead of the 1mm studs found on the LOW-PRO HEEL. The advantage is that they provide better grip on the ice. The disadvantage of wearing HEEL-GRIPS is that HEEL-GRIPS must be removed before going indoors because they will either damage floors or be slippery on hard smooth surfaces. Therefore I would recommend HEEL-GRIPS for delivery drivers not frequently going in and out of doors.

I recommend HIGH-PRO Ice Cleats for non-typical situations where maximum traction is a necessity. An example might include putting on chains.

I would recommend wearing the LOW-PRO or LOW-PRO HEEL until the driver is on the ground and then changing into the HIGH-PRO Ice Cleats.

Why Traditional Ice Cleats are Impractical and Unsafe for Delivery Drivers

Why Ordinary Ice Cleats are Impractical

According to wired.com, the average UPS driver makes 120 deliveries each day. If that UPS driver is wearing traditional Ice Cleats safely, he or she would have put on and taken off their Ice Cleats a minimum of 120 times. The driver would put them on when getting off the truck and take them off when getting back in because of
  • it's not safe to drive wearing traditional studded Ice Cleats, and
  • studded Ice Grips can be slippery on the delivery truck floors.
Now assume that 30 of those deliveries required entering the customer's building. Entering buildings would require that the driver remove the Ice Grips when going into the building and putting them back on when exiting to walk back to the truck. That's because of
  • studded Ice Cleats will damage interior floors, and
  • both studded Ice Cleats and Ice Grips with wound steel coils are extremely slippery on smooth interior floors.
Therefore, it's reasonable to assume that the average UPS Driver would be required to put on and remove their Ice Cleats 150 times when there's ice, packed snow, or black ice on the ground.

Most Delivery Drivers will not, and indeed cannot, use Ice Cleats because they would never get done.

  • Traditional Ice Cleats have to be removed before going indoors because the aggressive studs will damage floors or are slippery on dry, smooth hard floors.
  • Many highly-rated Ice Cleats are not effective on all slippery winter surfaces especially on black ice commonly found around transportation centers.

Ordinary Ice Cleats Can Be Unsafe for Delivery Drivers

Ice Cleats with studs can be slippery on metal surfaces. This is especially true for Spike-less Ice Cleats with wound steel coils. Therefore, the steps entering and exiting the delivery truck are hazardous unless the driver waits to put their Ice Cleats on after they're on the ground. However, waiting to put Ice Cleats on until drivers are on the ground makes that first step on to the ground extremely dangerous on ice and snow. Many well-rated Ice Cleats are not effective on all winter slippery surfaces. The key to traction on ice is penetration. Many Ice Cleats become less effective in frigid temperatures because ice is denser and the spike design is not aggressive enough to penetrate the ice. This shortcoming is especially true for spike-less Ice Cleats with coils.

Ice Cleats without self-cleaning aggressive treads are ineffective in loose snow; and debris can build up on the bottom of the Ice Cleats preventing studs or coils from contacting the ice. Aggressive treads are also crucial when a thin layer of snow covers ice and black ice. Aggressive treads increase that the studs make contact with the ice and black ice under that thin layer of snow.
