Best Ice Cleats for Transportation and Trucking

Exclamation PointCrucial Considerations When Choosing the Best Ice Cleats for Transportation and Trucking

Heel-Only Strap-On Ice Cleats are Safest to Use While Driving.
There is no one best Ice Cleat for Transportation, Trucking Companies, and Freight Carriers because the selection depends on
  • long-haul vs. short-haul trucking and shuttle drivers;
  • balancing the risk of safe driving vs. injuries from slipping on ice;
  • the physical limitations of a particular driver; and
  • lastly, the duties performed by different employees in the Trucking Company including those who
    • drive;
    • work in the warehouse / loading dock;
    • refueling; and
    • those who perform yard checks.
Read this page to discover the best Ice Cleats for each category. If you still have questions, call me at 610-670-2549 for expert advice. Together we'll keep your employees safer and minimize lost time accidents resulting from slipping on ice and snow.

Ice Cleats for Transportation and Trucking Why Traditional Ice Cleats are Impractical for Truck Drivers

Traditional Ice Cleats, are not practical for most truck drivers because
  • Aggressive Spikes
    • Penetrate the rubber pedal covers and possibly impede the rapid movement between pedals in an emergency.
    • Can be slippery on steps when the driver enters or exits the cab depending upon the material used for the steps (metal to metal contact). Competing Ice Cleats with wound steel coils are especially slippery on steps or any flat, smooth non-ice or snow-covered surface. Therefore, the driver either has to
      • wait until after they've stepped down on to the ice to put Ice Cleats on therefore risking slipping on the ice as they step down, or
      • put Ice Cleats on before exiting the cab reducing the risk of slipping stepping down on to the ice but increasing the risk slipping on the step.
  • Traditional Ice Cleats have to be removed before going indoors because the aggressive studs will damage floors or are slippery on dry, smooth hard floors.
  • Many highly-rated Ice Cleats are not effective on all slippery winter surfaces especially on black ice commonly found around transportation centers.

Full-Sole Heavy Duty Ice Cleats for Transportation and TruckingFull-Sole Studded Transitional Ice Cleats

Why I recommend Full_Sole Ice Cleats for Transportation and TruckingWhy I Recommend Full-Sole Ice Cleats

Full-Sole Ice Cleats reduce the risk of ice-related injuries far better than Heel-Only Ice Cleats especially on uneven, "bumpy" ice. If your company doesn't have restrictions regarding Full-Sole shoe attachments while driving, Winter Walking LOW-PRO is your best choice. Here's why.

26 aggressive, durable 1mm Tungsten Carbide studs minimally extend beyond the Ice Cleat's self-cleaning tread making them safer to wear

  • while driving because 1mm studs will not penetrate pedals; and
  • when stepping on cab entry steps and most indoor floors. These Ice Grips are safer because of when the driver places weight on the Ice Grip, both the studs and the tread make contact with the ground. (You would not wear them on finished interior wooden floors.)

LOW-PRO are practical Ice Cleats Truck Drivers will use. Furthermore, drivers will be more productive because they'll be able move faster across slippery ground.

Note: Ice Cleats with Transitional Traction provide excellent traction on ice, packed and loose snow, slush, and black ice. However, if you encounter occasional deliveries on steep, icy hills, consider HIGH-PRO Ice Cleats (shown later on this page) in addition to LOW-PROs. HIGH-PRO Ice Grips have even more aggressive 2mm studs. However, you would have to remove them before going indoors. Therefore, you would wear the LOW-PRO Ice Grips throughout the day and use the HIGH-PRO for the worst situations.

Winter Walking LOW-PRO is my top recommendation. LOW-PRO is also safe to wear on most indoor floors without damaging them. So you can leave LOW-PRO all day.

26 1mm tungsten carbide studs and aggressive self-cleaning treads provide excellent traction on ice, packed snow, deep snow, and black ice.

If you don't mind the bright color, these are the Ice Cleats to get that you can safely wear driving your truck. Most people don't care about color.

AltraGrips-Lite are also available in XS and also fit larger shoe sizes.

AltraGrips-Lite LP Demo Video
AltraGrips-Lite LP have the same advantages as Winter Walking LOW-PRO as far as being safe to wear on most indoor floors. They have 16 1mm tungsten carbide studs instead of 26 found on LOW-PRO. The treads are not quite as aggressive and they do not use Dual-Material Construction so they're less durable. However, many people and businesses prefer an all-black Ice Cleat because it calls less attention to you. Furthermore, AltraGrips-Lite come in XS and also fit larger footwear than LOW-PRO.

Important Things to Consider About Heel CleatsCrucial Things to Consider About Heel Ice Cleats

I always recommend Full-Sole Ice Cleats whenever Company Policy doesn't prohibit their use while driving. Every stud must be effective on both Full-Sole and Heel-Only Ice Cleats. However, aggressive, effective studs are more crucial on Heel-Only Ice Cleats because you depend upon far fewer spikes to gain traction.

Therefore, choose Winter Walking HEEL GRIPS™ with 26 2mm tungsten carbide studs if you're not constantly going in and out of doors. That's because you have to remove HEEL GRIPS before going indoors because of the longer spikes will damage interior floors and are slippery on smooth, hard surfaces.

Choose Winter Walking LOW-PRO HEEL™ with 26 1mm tungsten carbide studs if you're constantly going in and out of doors because they're safe to wear on most interior floors.

Choose Gritted Ice Cleats when non-conductivity and non-sparking. Examples include oil and gas extraction, processing, and transport, refueling operations. around explosives, and grain storage. Non-sparking is safer than Ice Cleats that are only spark-retardant.

GRIPS-LITE give you improved traction on a variety of slick surfaces including oil and grease, wet floors, and chemicals. However, if your primary concern is slick winter surfaces and you do not require non-conductivity or non-sparking, choose a Studded Ice Cleat. That's because Gritted Ice Cleats only reduce falls on the ice and snow by 40 to 50 percent and because they're far less effective in frigid temperatures when the ice is denser.

FAQs About the Best Ice Cleats for Transportation and Trucking Helpful Questions About the Best Ice Cleats for Transportation and Trucking

How do you decide which Ice Cleats are safe to wear while driving?

Here are the things I personally consider.

  • The straps must hug the footwear close enough so that they do not impede movement between the pedals, especially in an emergency.
  • The studs should not penetrate the rubber on the pedals, which would, if they did, again impede moving between the pedals.
  • The last, and in my mind, a less important consideration, is that the studs do not tear-up the rubber on the pedals.

The absolute safest ice cleats to wear while driving is heel-only ice cleats because there are no straps to get hung up, and there are no studs on the forefoot to stick on to the pedals. The obvious downside is that heel-only ice cleats are less effective and also force you to walk flat-footed to keep the studs contacting the ice. The final decision is really up to the individual or company safety manager.

Crucial Ice Cleats Sizing Tips

  1. You can go by the shoe sizes. However, the actual size of the shoe or boot can vary significantly for the same foot size. So option two below is a better way to select the correct size.
    (OR)
  2. Measure the length of your shoe or boot. Measure the bottom from the tip of the sole to the base of the heel. Measure on "the flat", don't wrap around. We want the length. Then find the size on the sizing chart with the Footwear Length Range that spans the length of your footwear. Measure carefully. Measure twice. Our goal is to get you the right size on the first try to make you as safe as possible as soon as possible.
Ice Cleats Sizes are Unisex that fit men's and women's shoes and boots according to the sizing charts.
Always try your Ice Grips on as soon as you receive them for two reasons.
  1. You want to be ready for the bad weather. Don't wait until the ice is on the ground to find out you need a size exchange.
  2. I can't do free size exchanges for Ice Cleats that have been used because I can't resell them.
FAQs

What should I do if the length of my shoe or boot is extremely close to the breakpoint of a size range? Should I choose the next larger size? For example, assume the length of your boot or shoe is just under 12½". You look at the specific Size Chart for Ice Cleats you're buying. Assume for this example the Medium has size range of 11½" to < 12½" and a Large is 12½" to < 13". For regular shoes and work shoes, stick with the smaller of the two sizes your considering. If you're planning to use your Ice Grips on heavier winter boots, choose the bigger size.

I'm planning to use the Ice Cleats on both my shoes and boots. But they're different lengths. What should I do?

If the difference in length is small, order the size for the larger boots. Purchase the optional Ankle Strap to use when you use the Ice Grips on your shoes. The ankle strap will make sure they stay on. If the difference in length is significant, you may need two sizes of Ice Cleats. That's because you want the Ice Cleats to be snug, so they not only stay on your footwear but also stay aligned.

I have a large company. There's no way I can measure everyone's footwear.

I understand. Go by shoe sizes. I'll be happy to exchange sizes later on. However, please make sure you haven't used the Ice Cleats outdoors.

Is the measuring technique 100% accurate?

Nope. It's accurate most of the time. Measuring is far superior to go by shoe size.
Ice Cleat Ankle Straps
Winter Walking Ice Cleats fit securely on most shoes and boots. Most people do not need or use the Ankle Strap. However, Ankle Straps add an additional level of comfort knowing your Ice Cleats will stay on your footwear. It's more critical to consider Ankle Straps if
