Benefits

Yaktrax Walk
  • are incredibly user-friendly because you walk naturally, not awkwardly and flat-footed as you're for to do with many competing ice traction devices;
  • provide excellent traction on ice and packed snow because the patented SKIDLOCK System provides hundreds of biting edges that grip the ice for 360° traction (Important! Yaktrax provide excellent traction on ice and packed snow. However, you have to be very careful on sanded or gravel covered road surfaces or when stepping on smooth, non-ice and snow covered marble or granite surfaces. While they won't damage most floors you still have to take them off before walking on a smooth, dry floor.);
  • are durable when used for occasional, light-duty applications because the Walk has long-wearing elastomer straps and 1.2mm abrasion resistant hand-wound stainless steel coils;

  • won't damage your shoes and boots;
  • are easy to put on and take off in the coldest weather because the elastomer straps stay flexible to -41°F;
  • doesn't add any noticeable weight to your footwear because they're extremely lightweight;
  • are handy and available when and where you need them because you can simply fold them up and just stick them in your pocket or glove compartment; and
  • extremely comfortable.

Who Uses Yaktrax Walk and How They're Used

Yaktrax Walk is designed to provide safety and peace of mind while performing light, routine, activities. Examples would include:
  • walking to the mailbox;
  • shoveling snow;
  • cleaning off the car;
  • walking from your car across icy parking lots to the grocery, drug store, or the office;
  • negotiating icy, packed snow-covered stairs or driveways; and
  • lastly, safely getting to doctor, dentist or other appointments.

Yaktrax Walk are a favorite choice for

They're designed for occasional use. For example, they're perfect for people living in the Middle Atlantic States.

Consider the Yaktrax PRO if you live in an area where

  • you get frequent snow and ice;
  • participate in sports; or
  • work outdoors.
Yaktrax PRO does not give you better traction than Yaktrax Walk. However, the PRO has tougher real rubber straps and thicker coils so it simply lasts longer.

For superior durability and traction on all slippery surfaces, consider Winter Walking HIGH-PRO Ice Cleats sold at SlipResistant.net.

Many elderly or people with disabilities causing weakness in their hands may still be better off choosing the Yaktrax Walk. That's because the PRO is a little harder to put on because the tougher real rubber straps are harder to stretch over your footwear.

It's better to have something that keeps you safe and may have to be replaced more frequently than to have something that lasts longer that you can't use.

Also, consider Winter Walking LOW-PRO Ice Cleats that can be worn on most indoor surfaces and are safe to wear while driving. LOW-PRO also has patented Dual Pull Tabs that allow you to use both hands o stretch them over you footwear.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between the Yaktrax Walk and the Yaktrax Walker?
There is no difference. Yaktrax renamed the Yaktrax Walker to Yaktrax Walk. It was purely a marketing decision.
Will the Yaktrax PRO give me better traction than the Yaktrax Walk?
No. The only way the Pro's traction is superior to the Walk is that the thicker, stronger straps and Velcro™ Performance Strap keeps the PRO better aligned on your footwear.
Are Yaktrax good for Seniors?

It depends. You must remove Yaktrax before going indoors if the interior surface is smooth because the steel coils are extremely slippery on those surfaces. Examples include the supermarket, drug store, and post office. If it's not easy for you to take Yaktrax off and put them back on you have a problem.

You should remove Yaktrax before driving because the straps can impede movement between the pedals.

Note: Yaktrax Walk is easier to put on and take off than the Yaktrax Pro because the straps aren't as strong.

If you live in the city, you must be careful where you step because Yaktrax can be extremely slippery on utility covers, sewer grates, floors in train stations, smooth bricks, and on entry steps on mass transit.

If you have negotiate steeper inclines, or you live where temperatures drop to extremely low temperatures, you may want a more aggressive tractions device.

If these situations apply to you, got to Ice Cleats for Senior Citizens and the Elderly.

How long does the Yaktrax Walk last?
Yaktrax are a consumable just like any other article of clothing or ice cleat. How long your Yaktrax Walk lasts depends upon several factors including
  • your weight;
  • how often do you use them; and
  • lastly, how much bare payment you walk on. It's rare that every foot of a sidewalk, parking lot, or road is completely covered with ice and packed snow. It's unreasonable to remove them and then put them back on every time you encounter a dry patch. Bare spots speed up the abrasion on the steel coils because the coils are abrasion resistant, not abrasion proof.
  • Will you be walking over rough surfaces that may tend to cut the rubber straps.

Now having said all that on the average you can expect two seasons. When you consider the cost per use it's very low-cost insurance compared to the cost of an injury.

Will Yaktrax eliminate the risk of me slipping on ice and packed snow?
No. No traction device can guarantee you won't slip and fall on ice. What Yaktrax can do is significantly decrease the probability that you won't fall to make the risk acceptable.
Do Yaktrax work in deep snow or slush?

No. Look at my Ice Cleats Buyer's Guide to find industrial grade ice cleats that will work in snow and slush.

Winter Walking SPARE SPIKE™ and Winter Walking LOW-PRO are a low cost alternatives for Yaktrax Walk.

Winter Walking HIGH-PRO Ice Cleats are an exciting new alternative to Yaktrax Pro.

Must I remove my Yaktrax every time I go indoors?

You absolutely must remove Yaktrax before going indoors where there are smooth, dry floors like those found in the

  • grocery store;
  • drug store,
  • train station; and
  • post office.

That's because Yaktrax are extremely slippery on this type of floor.

If you are not capable of removing them or you are constantly going in and out of doors consider ALTRAGRIPS-LITE LOW PROFILE Ice Cleats sold at SlipResistant.net.

Are Yaktrax good for hiking?

It depends where you're hiking. Yaktrax are not designed to be used off-road.

  • Rough surfaces will cut the straps and abrade the steel coils.
  • The steel coils can be extremely slippery on exposed rocks especially if they're smooth or rounded.
  • Yaktrax should not be worn on sandy or gravel covered surfaces.
  • Frequent non-ice and snow covered surfaces will also affect durability.
Do Yaktrax work on black ice?
I do not recommend Yaktrax for use on black ice because you need more aggressive traction. Consider Winter Walking HIGH-PRO or Winter Walking LOW-PRO Ice Cleats.
I've read that Yaktrax have 10 times more biting edges than spiked ice cleats. Does this mean the traction is 10 times better than spiked ice cleats?
No. The key to traction on ice is penetration. Yaktrax stainless steel coils are non-aggressive. Therefore, traction requires hundreds of biting edges to equal the traction of just one well-designed spike. In addition, the non-aggressive coils become less effective in frigid temperatures when ice is denser.

Can I run with Yaktrax?
I don't recommend any ice cleats for running. I especially don't recommend spikeless ice cleats for running because you need aggressive spikes. Furthermore, one of the most common ways Yaktrax fail is that wound steel coil breaks. If a coil breaks, it can catch on you running pants causing you to fall forward.
Will Yaktrax work on Ski Boots?
No. Implus does offer a product called SKITRAX. However, I don't carry them
Will Yaktrax work on Neos® Boots or Bunny Boots?
No.
Will Yaktrax work on roofs?
No. Furthermore the metal on metal contact climbing a ladder would be extremely hazardous Visit Korkers.com to find tractions devices specifically for roofs.
What are WinterTrax?
WinterTrax are manufactured by Implus. They're an ultra-light duty, one-size-fits-all, extremely inexpensive almost one-time use version of Yaktrax. One national marketer sells them as being actual Yaktrax and makes it appear that you're getting a great deal by getting two pair of Yaktrax for the price of one pair from another source. Again, WinterTrax are not Yaktrax. I don't sell WINTERTRAX because they don't hold up and they don't stay on your shoes.
Why are they called Yaktrax?
They're named after the surefooted Tibetan Yak. But the concept really has nothing to do with the Yak. The idea originated by observing how Sherpas would tie strips of leather around their shoes to get traction on ice.

Important Warnings and Safety Tips

Yaktrax Walk will not damage most indoor floors. Nevertheless, you must remove Yaktrax before walking on smooth, dry floors because Yaktrax are extremely slippery on these surfaces.

Do not drive while wearing Yaktrax. The straps can catch on pedals.

I do not recommend Yaktrax for people living or working in cities. Again, Yaktrax are slippery on smooth surfaces that include

  • sewer grates;
  • utility hole covers;
  • flooring in train stations;
  • metallic steps found on buses and trains; and
  • tile, brick, or marble surfaces.

Do not use Yaktrax on surfaces covered with sand or loose gravel.

If you are unable or unwilling to remove Yaktrax Walk before going indoors or driving, or you live or work in a city, consider Winter Walking LOW-PRO Ice Cleats. LOW-PRO and safe to wear on most indoor surfaces and while driving. LOW-PRO also provides better traction on the city hazards mentioned above.

"This item is a necessity to own and use during icy and snowy conditions. Their lightweight use and quick attachment to shoes make them a plus, with many stars to follow. Having fallen a number of times, they are certainly a joy to be in the upright position, then laying on the cold ice like a vacationing Harbor Seal.
