Ice Cleats That Keep You Safe On and Off the Lake
Is ice fishing dangerous? It can be. Is it worth it? Yes, if you do it safely, and one of the most important precautions is protecting yourself from falls with good ice fishing cleats.
No ice cleat can guarantee you won't slip, but nothing reduces your risk more than heavy-duty, professionally designed ice cleats. Ice fishing cleats have to:
grip ice, black ice, snow, packed snow, and even mud;
keep you safe on the lake and on the often steep, icy path between your truck and the shore;
fit and stay on the large, insulated pac boots most ice fishermen wear; and
hold up to harsh, off-road conditions far from help.
Penetration is the key to traction on ice. Think of driving a nail into wood: a soft, dull nail works in pine but is useless in oak. Ice cleats that work on level ice in mild weather can fail on hills or in frigid temperatures, when ice is denser. That's an even bigger problem for coil-style ice cleats.
Tungsten carbide studs are several times harder and more durable than the carbon steel or stainless steel spikes, screws, and coils on most ice fishing cleats, so every stud is there and sharp when you need it.
Molded-in studs are more reliable than replaceable studs and screws, which come loose more often after repeated replacement.
Studs across the whole sole. On rough ice, you need studs in the middle of the sole, not just around the edges. Step on a raised spot where you have no studs, and your foot can slide fast. Once you lose traction, it's very hard to get it back.
Straps That Keep Them On and Aligned
Ice cleats can't protect you if they slip out of position or come off. Look for ice cleats designed for the oversized pac boots most ice fishermen wear. Strap-on sandal ice cleats are the most reliable way to fit any boot, especially big ones.
ICEGRIPS™ use strong, industrial-quality straps. Once they're on your boots, especially with the ankle strap configuration, they become part of the boot, and they aren't going anywhere, whatever you're pushing or pulling.
A Self-Cleaning Tread for Snow
You need traction in deep and packed snow, not just on ice. ICEGRIPS™ have a patented, self-cleaning Angle Tread™ that grips snow and flexes snow and debris out as you walk, the way twisting an ice cube tray pops out the cubes. That matters, because studs can't help you if packed snow keeps them off the ice.
Durability Far From Help
Harsh, off-road conditions chew up the straps and parts of recreational ice cleats quickly, and failures tend to happen when you're farthest from your truck. Many of the best fishing spots are where no one else is, so it can be a long, treacherous walk back with one working ice cleat, and help can take a long time to arrive.
With ICEGRIPS™, only the industrial-strength sandal touches the ground, so the straps stay clear of the sharp objects that cut straps and break chains. Any ice cleat can fail, but ICEGRIPS™ minimize the risk.
A Defined Heel for Climbing
ICEGRIPS™ have a ½-inch defined heel, so you can climb more safely when you're unloading gear from your truck or trailer.
And the reward? That's one beautiful walleye. Ice fishing is worth it.
Questions About Ice Fishing Cleats
Are more studs always better?
Not always. Some ice fishing cleats have 40 or more small spikes. With too many points of contact, you get a "bed of nails" effect: your weight is spread so thin that the spikes can't penetrate the ice. That gets worse in frigid temperatures, when ice is denser. Well-distributed, aggressive studs matter more than the count.
Why do recreational ice fishing cleats get good reviews?
Almost any ice cleat is better than a bare boot, so almost any ice cleat seems great until you've used industrial-grade ice cleats. You can feel the difference in quality the moment you take them out of the box.
What about ice fishing boots with built-in studs?
It depends on the boot. Look for well-distributed tungsten carbide studs; many studded boots use carbon steel studs that wear out several times faster. Even good studs usually wear out before a quality pair of boots does, especially because you can't remove them when you're walking on bare ground. And studded boots are expensive.

ICEGRIPS™ Ice Cleats Sizing Advice
Here's my recommended approach to choosing the correct size.
First, find the ICEGRIPS™ size that corresponds to your shoe or boot size.
Second, measure the length of your footwear in inches and add ¼ inch. Then compare that length to the "Footwear Length in Inches" column in the size chart corresponding to the size you found in the first step.
If the length exceeds that size range, even by as little as ¼, select the next larger size.
If the length falls below that size range, again, even by as little as ¼, select the next smaller size.
Questions:
What if the measurement I get in the second step above is more than 14.25"?
I would not buy ICEGRIPS™.
Will ICEGRIPS™ fit large, bulky boots?
Yes. A "Bulky Boot" Strap Kit is available at an additional cost.

Crucial Ice Cleats Sizing Advice
You can go by the shoe sizes. However, the shoe or boot size can vary significantly for the same foot size. Option two below is a better way to select the correct size.
(OR)
Measure the length of your shoe or boot. Measure the bottom from the tip of the sole to the base of the heel. Measure on "the flat", don't wrap around. We want the length. Then, find the size on the sizing chart with the Footwear Length Range, which spans the length of your footwear. Measure carefully. Measure twice. Our goal is to get you the right size on the first try to make you as safe as possible as soon as possible.
Ice cleats sizes are unisex and fit men's and women's shoes and boots according to the sizing charts.
Always try your ice cleats on when you receive them for two reasons.
You want to be ready for the bad weather. Be sure to find out you need a size exchange before the ice is on the ground.
I can't do free size exchanges for ice cleats that you have used because I can't resell them.
FAQs
What should I do if the length of my shoe or boot is extremely close to the breakpoint of a size range? Should I choose the next larger size? For example, assume the length of your boot or shoe is just under 12½". You look at the specific size chart for ice cleats you're buying. Assume for this example the Medium has a size range of 11½" to < 12½" and a Large is 12½" to < 13" For regular shoes and work shoes, stick with the smaller of the two sizes you're considering. Choose the bigger size if you plan to use your ice cleats on heavier winter boots.
I plan to use the ice cleats on my shoes and boots. But they're different lengths. What should I do?
If the difference in length is small, order the size for the larger boots. Purchase the optional Ankle Strap to use when you use the ice cleats on your shoes. The ankle strap will make sure they stay on. If the difference in length is significant, you may need two sizes of ice cleats. That's because you want the ice cleats to be snug so they stay on your footwear and aligned.
I have a large company. There's no way I can measure everyone's footwear.
I understand. Go by shoe sizes. I'll be happy to exchange sizes later on. However, please make sure you haven't used the ice cleats outdoors.
Is the measuring technique 100% accurate?
Nope. It's accurate most of the time. Measuring is far superior to go by shoe size.
