Steep residential driveway covered in ice

A steep, icy driveway turns everyday chores like taking out the trash, getting the mail, or clearing snow into a real fall risk. On flat ground, a slip is bad enough. On a slope, gravity keeps you sliding, sometimes all the way into the street, where cars can't stop on the ice either. Every winter, a lot of people are seriously hurt falling on icy driveways.

Search for the best ice cleats for steep driveways and you'll mostly find "Top 10" lists. I'm not giving you one. I carry several ice cleats that will grip on a driveway, but I only recommend the three below. Based on my 16+ years of selling ice cleats, they give you the best traction when the ground is tilted against you. On a slope, the smallest design detail can decide whether you catch yourself or go down.

No ice cleat can guarantee you won't slip and fall, especially on a steep, icy driveway. What I can promise is that these ice cleats will do more to reduce your risk than any others I know of. And if you're not 100% satisfied, you can return them for a full refund.

My 3 Picks at a Glance

Ice Cleat Style Tungsten Carbide Studs Bulky, Insulated Boots Best For

What Makes Ice Cleats Work on a Steep Driveway

On a slope, you're working against gravity. The instant you lose traction, you start sliding, and there may be no second chance for the studs to catch. These are the details that make the difference.

Sharp Tungsten Carbide Studs

To grip ice, a stud has to bite into the surface. The smaller its point, the better it penetrates. A single tungsten carbide stud out-grips the hundreds of edges on a coil-style traction device. Sharpness matters most:

  • in frigid temperatures, when ice gets harder and denser, and on black ice; and
  • on a slope, where one stud may be all that catches you when you start to slip.

Tungsten carbide studs stay sharp for their entire life and last far longer than carbon steel or case-hardened spikes, which dull as they wear. Spikeless and gritted ice cleats lose much or all of their grip on cold, dense ice.

Plenty of Studs, Spread Across the Whole Sole

More studs are generally better, as long as they're well placed. Many ice cleats bunch their studs in one area or only around the edge, so they can miss bumpy, uneven ice entirely. Once you start sliding on a steep driveway, it's hard, and often impossible, for the remaining studs to catch and restore your footing.

2mm Studs and a Self-Cleaning Tread

For walking and everyday use, longer studs grip better, up to 2mm. Beyond that, they become a tripping hazard. Stud length matters most when a thin layer of snow covers the ice. An aggressive, self-cleaning tread:

  • gives you traction in deeper snow and slush; and
  • pushes out snow and debris so the studs stay in contact with the ice. Build-up is a major weakness of spikeless coil ice cleats.

A Spike Under Your Heel

HIGH-PRO ice cleat heel spike

Your heel hits the ground first on every step. Without a stud there, your foot can shoot out in front of you, especially walking downhill. Ice cleats without a heel spike force you to walk flat-footed. That isn't natural, so you have to think about it, and you'll forget the moment you need to move quickly.

That's why the patented Heel Spike matters so much. If your foot slides forward mid-step, no other stud can back it up, so it needs to be a sharp, aggressive tungsten carbide stud.

A Fit That Stays Put

Shoveling and running a snowblower mean constant pushing, pulling, and twisting, and a slope adds even more force. Your ice cleats need to stay on in deep snow and stay aligned, so the studs remain under your foot where they do their job.

Safe to Wear While Driving

If your car is parked on that icy driveway, choose ice cleats with no straps or parts that interfere with the pedals. Then you don't have to take them off and put them back on at the car. HIGH-PRO and ICE BEAST™ HIGH-PRO are both safe to wear while driving.

Why Hardware-Store Ice Cleats Fail on Steep Driveways

Steep driveway with fresh snow over a layer of ice

The photo above shows the worst case: a steep driveway covered in ice, with fresh snow on top. That's exactly the kind of surface that calls for professional-grade ice cleats.

Every year, I get calls from people who can't find ice cleats that work on their steep driveway. The reason is almost always the same. The ice cleats sold in hardware, sporting goods, and department stores, and by most online sellers, are recreational ice cleats. Their manufacturers focus first on keeping costs down and second on preventing slips and falls.

I sell professional-grade Winter Walking ice cleats. Winter Walking reverses those priorities: prevent slips and falls first, then keep the price as low as possible without giving up effectiveness or quality. On a steep driveway, that difference matters.

Are Professional Ice Cleats Worth the Price?

The ice cleats I recommend may cost twice as much as cheap brands up front. They also grip better and last several times longer.

Then there's the cost of a fall. With today's deductibles and copays, a single trip to the emergency room can cost far more than a pair of ice cleats. Many of my customers come to me after a serious, life-changing injury. They'll be the first to tell you that paying a little more for ice cleats that give you the best chance of staying on your feet is the best investment you can make.

Crucial Ice Cleats Sizing Advice

  1. You can go by the shoe sizes. However, the shoe or boot size can vary significantly for the same foot size. Option two below is a better way to select the correct size.
    (OR)
  2. Measure the length of your shoe or boot. Measure the bottom from the tip of the sole to the base of the heel. Measure on "the flat", don't wrap around. We want the length. Then, find the size on the sizing chart with the Footwear Length Range, which spans the length of your footwear. Measure carefully. Measure twice. Our goal is to get you the right size on the first try to make you as safe as possible as soon as possible.
Ice cleats sizes are unisex and fit men's and women's shoes and boots according to the sizing charts.
Always try your ice cleats on when you receive them for two reasons.
  1. You want to be ready for the bad weather. Be sure to find out you need a size exchange before the ice is on the ground.
  2. I can't do free size exchanges for ice cleats that you have used because I can't resell them.
FAQs

What should I do if the length of my shoe or boot is extremely close to the breakpoint of a size range? Should I choose the next larger size? For example, assume the length of your boot or shoe is just under 12½". You look at the specific size chart for ice cleats you're buying. Assume for this example the Medium has a size range of 11½" to < 12½" and a Large is 12½" to < 13" For regular shoes and work shoes, stick with the smaller of the two sizes you're considering. Choose the bigger size if you plan to use your ice cleats on heavier winter boots.

I plan to use the ice cleats on my shoes and boots. But they're different lengths. What should I do?

If the difference in length is small, order the size for the larger boots. Purchase the optional Ankle Strap to use when you use the ice cleats on your shoes. The ankle strap will make sure they stay on. If the difference in length is significant, you may need two sizes of ice cleats. That's because you want the ice cleats to be snug so they stay on your footwear and aligned.

I have a large company. There's no way I can measure everyone's footwear.

I understand. Go by shoe sizes. I'll be happy to exchange sizes later on. However, please make sure you haven't used the ice cleats outdoors.

Is the measuring technique 100% accurate?

Nope. It's accurate most of the time. Measuring is far superior to go by shoe size.
