How to Choose Ice Cleats for Your Trucking and Transportation Team
There's no single best ice cleat for a trucking company, freight carrier, or transportation team. The right choice depends on:
long-haul, short-haul, or shuttle driving
how you balance safe driving against the risk of slipping on ice
any physical limitations a driver has
each employee's job: driving, working the warehouse or loading dock, refueling, or doing yard checks
This page shows the best ice cleats for each job. If you still have questions, call me at 610-670-2549. Together we'll keep your employees safer and cut lost-time accidents from slips on ice and snow.
Why Ordinary Ice Cleats Don't Work for Truck Drivers
Aggressive spikes and pedals don't mix. Long spikes can dig into rubber pedal covers and slow your foot moving between pedals in an emergency.
Spikes are slippery on cab steps. On metal steps, it's metal against metal. Coil-style ice cleats are especially slippery on steps and any smooth surface without ice or snow. So drivers have two bad choices: put ice cleats on after stepping down onto the ice, risking a slip on the way down, or put them on in the cab and risk slipping on the steps.
They have to come off indoors. Aggressive studs damage floors and are slippery on smooth, dry floors.
Many don't grip everything. Plenty of highly rated ice cleats struggle on black ice, which is common around terminals, yards, and docks.
The ice cleats below are designed around these problems.
Non-sparking and non-conductive, with grip on oil and grease
Full-Sole Ice Cleats for Drivers, Docks, and Yards
Full-sole ice cleats reduce the risk of ice-related injuries far better than heel-only ice cleats, especially on uneven, bumpy ice. If your company allows full-sole ice cleats while driving, LOW-PRO and ICE BEAST™ LOW-PRO are your best choices.
Their durable 1mm tungsten carbide studs barely extend past the self-cleaning tread. When the driver puts weight on them, both the studs and the tread touch the surface. That makes them safer while driving, because 1mm studs won't dig into the pedals, and safer on cab steps and most indoor floors. (Don't wear them on finished hardwood floors.) Drivers will actually wear them, and they'll move faster across slippery ground.
For occasional stops on steep, icy hills, consider adding a pair of HIGH-PRO® or ICE BEAST™ HIGH-PRO ice cleats. Their 2mm studs are even more aggressive, but they have to come off before going indoors. Drivers would wear LOW-PRO all day and switch to HIGH-PRO for those stops.
Heel-Only Ice Cleats: The Safest to Wear While Driving
Heel-only ice cleats are the safest to wear while driving. There are no straps on the forefoot to catch, and no studs to stick to the pedals. Many companies require them for that reason.
The trade-off is traction. I always recommend full-sole ice cleats when company policy allows them while driving. With heel cleats, you depend on far fewer studs, so every one of them has to be aggressive and reliable. Heel cleats also make you walk more flat-footed to keep the studs on the ice.
Which one? If drivers are constantly in and out of buildings, choose LOW-PRO HEEL, which can be worn on most indoor floors. If they're mostly outdoors, choose HEEL-GRIPS™ for their longer 2mm studs.
refuel trucks, work in maintenance, or haul fuel, where ice cleats must be non-sparking and non-conductive
also need better traction on oil, grease, wet floors, and chemicals
Why it works for refueling and maintenance:
Aluminum oxide grit bands are non-sparking and non-conductive, and they renew themselves as they wear
Non-sparking is much safer than spark-retardant
Safe to wear indoors and while driving or operating equipment
Under 4 oz. per shoe, with Dual Pull Tabs for easy on and off
Gritted ice cleats reduce falls on ice and snow by 40 to 50 percent and are much less effective on cold, dense ice. If you don't need non-sparking ice cleats, choose a studded ice cleat like LOW-PRO.
Want ankle straps? The Ankle Strap Kit fits GRIPS-LITE™ too.
*Measured on the bottom of your shoe or boot from the tip of the sole to the base of the heel.
Questions About Ice Cleats for Trucking and Transportation
How do you decide which ice cleats are safe to wear while driving?
Here's what I consider:
The straps must hug the footwear closely enough that they don't get in the way of moving between the pedals, especially in an emergency.
The studs shouldn't dig into the rubber on the pedals, which would also slow your foot between pedals.
Less important, the studs shouldn't tear up the rubber on the pedals.
Heel-only ice cleats are the safest to wear while driving because there are no forefoot straps to catch and no forefoot studs to stick to the pedals. The downside is that they're less effective and make you walk flat-footed to keep the studs on the ice. The final decision is up to the driver or the company's safety manager.
Ice Cleats Your Drivers Will Actually Wear
Drivers are under constant pressure to stay on schedule. Stopping to take ice cleats off and put them back on at every stop is frustrating and slow, so many drivers don't do it. Often, they can't. Ice cleats they can wear while driving, on cab steps, and on most indoor floors largely remove that problem. Your employees stay safer, lost-time accidents go down, and productivity stays high.
Outfitting a fleet? Volume discounts are applied automatically in your cart, and you can request a quote for 48 or more pairs. If measuring everyone's footwear isn't practical, order by shoe size. I'll exchange sizes later, as long as the ice cleats haven't been worn outdoors.

Crucial Ice Cleats Sizing Advice
You can go by the shoe sizes. However, the shoe or boot size can vary significantly for the same foot size. Option two below is a better way to select the correct size.
(OR)
Measure the length of your shoe or boot. Measure the bottom from the tip of the sole to the base of the heel. Measure on "the flat", don't wrap around. We want the length. Then, find the size on the sizing chart with the Footwear Length Range, which spans the length of your footwear. Measure carefully. Measure twice. Our goal is to get you the right size on the first try to make you as safe as possible as soon as possible.
Ice cleats sizes are unisex and fit men's and women's shoes and boots according to the sizing charts.
Always try your ice cleats on when you receive them for two reasons.
You want to be ready for the bad weather. Be sure to find out you need a size exchange before the ice is on the ground.
I can't do free size exchanges for ice cleats that you have used because I can't resell them.
FAQs
What should I do if the length of my shoe or boot is extremely close to the breakpoint of a size range? Should I choose the next larger size? For example, assume the length of your boot or shoe is just under 12½". You look at the specific size chart for ice cleats you're buying. Assume for this example the Medium has a size range of 11½" to < 12½" and a Large is 12½" to < 13" For regular shoes and work shoes, stick with the smaller of the two sizes you're considering. Choose the bigger size if you plan to use your ice cleats on heavier winter boots.
I plan to use the ice cleats on my shoes and boots. But they're different lengths. What should I do?
If the difference in length is small, order the size for the larger boots. Purchase the optional Ankle Strap to use when you use the ice cleats on your shoes. The ankle strap will make sure they stay on. If the difference in length is significant, you may need two sizes of ice cleats. That's because you want the ice cleats to be snug so they stay on your footwear and aligned.
I have a large company. There's no way I can measure everyone's footwear.
I understand. Go by shoe sizes. I'll be happy to exchange sizes later on. However, please make sure you haven't used the ice cleats outdoors.
Is the measuring technique 100% accurate?
Nope. It's accurate most of the time. Measuring is far superior to go by shoe size.
ICE BEAST Ice Cleats Sizing Tips
ICE BEAST Ice Cleats run large. Therefore, if you have a normal winter boot and your shoe size is close to the minimum of a size range, choose the next smaller size. If you have a large, bulky boot, stick with the size chart.
Ice cleats sizes are unisex and fit men's and women's shoes and boots according to the sizing charts.

Ice Cleat Ankle Straps
Winter Walking Ice Cleats fit securely on most shoes and boots. Most people do not need or use the Ankle Strap. However, Ankle Straps add an additional level of comfort, knowing your ice cleats will stay on your footwear. It's more critical to consider Ankle Straps if you
walk through deep snow (especially wet snow), snow with a crusted surface, or mud because Winter Walking Ice Cleats are so comfortable that you may not notice one is missing until you've traveled some distance or, even worse, slip and fall; or
plan to wear them while you're using a snowblower because of the twisting often required while making a tight turn; and
are a senior citizen or a person with disabilities because retrieving an ice cleat that has come off and putting it back on your footwear might be almost impossible depending on the circumstances.
