Ice cleats gripping black ice on a sidewalk

Not All Ice Cleats Work on Black Ice

Black ice separates mediocre ice cleats from professional, industrial-quality ones. Most people assume every ice cleat works on black ice, but many don't.

Traction on ice comes from penetration, and that matters even more on black ice, which offers almost no friction. Black ice is even more treacherous when:

  • there's water or a layer of snow on top of it;
  • temperatures are frigid and the ice is denser;
  • it's on a sloping or uneven sidewalk, driveway, or parking lot; or
  • worst of all, all of these happen at once.

Three Things That Matter Most on Black Ice

  1. Aggressive studs. Penetrating black ice, or any ice, depends on how aggressive the traction system is. Coil-style ice cleats are the least aggressive, relying on hundreds of blunt edges. The most effective are sharp tungsten carbide studs with a small point, like those on Winter Walking ice cleats. It's like driving a blunt nail versus a sharp one. The recreational ice cleats sold in most sporting goods, hardware, and department stores fall somewhere in between.
  2. Enough well-distributed studs. At least one aggressive stud needs to be on the ice at all times. Once you lose traction, it's very hard to recover.
  3. Strong, dependable straps. They have to stay intact and keep the ice cleat aligned on your footwear. Lose one in the middle of a parking lot covered in black ice, and you're in trouble. Walking on black ice with one ice cleat is almost as bad as wearing none, and putting one back on while standing on black ice is something no one should attempt.

I can't guarantee the ice cleats I recommend will keep you from slipping on black ice. Any ice cleat, however well made, can break or come off. But in my professional opinion, the Winter Walking ice cleats I recommend will reduce your risk on black ice more than any others on the market.

Choosing the Right Ice Cleats for Black Ice

Full-Sole Ice Cleats Are Best

Choose full-sole ice cleats whenever you can. Aggressive tungsten carbide studs spread across the entire bottom of your shoe or boot give you far better traction, especially on uneven ice, and studs at the heel and front let you walk naturally.

The Most Aggressive Ice Cleats Aren't Always the Best Choice

If you're constantly going indoors or in and out of a vehicle, the most aggressive ice cleats may be impractical. Their sharp studs damage indoor floors and are slippery on smooth, hard floors, so they have to come off every time. People who have to keep taking them off and putting them back on soon stop wearing them. That includes delivery drivers, police officers, postal workers, and people who live in or commute into the city.

Even if you only go indoors occasionally, you may not be physically able to take ice cleats off and put them back on. That includes seniors, people with disabilities, and people recovering from surgery. My Winter Walking ice cleats with Transitional Traction™ give excellent traction on black ice, and you can wear them on most indoor floors and while driving. Their traction isn't quite as good as my most aggressive ice cleats, but you'll actually wear them, and they'll protect you.

Some companies don't allow drivers to wear full-sole ice cleats, out of concern they could get in the way of the pedals. For them, I recommend the best heel-only ice cleats below.

Stretch-On Ice Cleats with the Best Traction on Black Ice

Their 2mm tungsten carbide studs penetrate black ice best. Take them off before going indoors, because longer studs can damage floors and are slippery on smooth surfaces.

Heel-Only Ice Cleats for Black Ice

I always recommend full-sole ice cleats when company policy allows them while driving. With heel cleats, you depend on far fewer studs, so every one of them has to be aggressive and effective.

Which one? If you're constantly in and out of buildings, choose LOW-PRO HEEL, which you can wear on most indoor floors. If you're mostly outdoors, choose HEEL-GRIPS™ for their longer 2mm studs, and take them off before going inside, because they can damage floors and may be slippery on smooth, hard surfaces.

Winter Walking LOW-PRO HEEL Ice Cleats JD310

Choose LOW-PRO HEEL if you:

  • are only allowed to wear heel cleats while driving
  • go in and out of buildings all day
  • switch between shoes and bulky boots

Why it works on black ice:

  • Transitional Traction™: safe on most indoor floors and while driving
  • 14 well-distributed, molded-in 1mm tungsten carbide studs, seven per heel
  • Self-cleaning tread helps the studs reach the ice in snow
  • Adjustable, replaceable straps fit everything from shoes to bulky boots
  • Under 4 oz. each, small enough for a pocket or glove compartment

Choose HEEL-GRIPS™ if you:

  • are only allowed to wear heel cleats while driving
  • spend most of your time outdoors

Take HEEL-GRIPS™ off before you go inside. The longer studs can damage floors and are slippery on smooth, hard surfaces.

Why it works on black ice:

  • 10 well-distributed, molded-in 2mm tungsten carbide studs, five per heel, for more grip than LOW-PRO HEEL
  • Studs stay equally sharp for their entire life
  • Self-cleaning tread for deep snow
  • Adjustable, replaceable straps fit all your footwear, including bulky boots

When You Need Non-Sparking Ice Cleats

Gritted ice cleats are much less effective on black ice and in frigid temperatures than studded ice cleats. Choose GRIPS-LITE™ only if your job requires non-sparking, non-conductive footwear.

Winter Walking GRIPS-LITE™ JD6612

Choose GRIPS-LITE™ if you:

  • work around fuel, explosives, grain storage, or other volatile materials, where ice cleats must be non-sparking and non-conductive
  • also need better traction on oil, grease, wet floors, and chemicals

What you get:

  • Aluminum oxide grit bands are non-sparking and non-conductive, and they renew themselves as they wear
  • Non-sparking is much safer than spark-retardant
  • Safe to wear indoors and while driving or operating equipment
  • Under 4 oz. per shoe, with Dual Pull Tabs for easy on and off

Gritted ice cleats reduce falls on ice and snow by 40 to 50 percent and are much less effective on cold, dense ice. If you don't need non-sparking ice cleats, choose a studded ice cleat like LOW-PRO.

Want ankle straps? The Ankle Strap Kit fits GRIPS-LITE™ too.

No one is more dedicated to helping you find the best Ice Cleats and keeping you safe. I work very hard to bring you the most informative online store that's fast, easy-to-use, and mobile friendly. I don't want to lose a single sale based upon price alone.

Therefore, if you find a lower DELIVERED PRICE from a legitimate online store (not auction sites) selling authentic, new Winter Walking Ice Cleats, I'll match or better that price.

Crucial Ice Cleats Sizing Advice

  1. You can go by the shoe sizes. However, the shoe or boot size can vary significantly for the same foot size. Option two below is a better way to select the correct size.
    (OR)
  2. Measure the length of your shoe or boot. Measure the bottom from the tip of the sole to the base of the heel. Measure on "the flat", don't wrap around. We want the length. Then, find the size on the sizing chart with the Footwear Length Range, which spans the length of your footwear. Measure carefully. Measure twice. Our goal is to get you the right size on the first try to make you as safe as possible as soon as possible.
Ice cleats sizes are unisex and fit men's and women's shoes and boots according to the sizing charts.
Always try your ice cleats on when you receive them for two reasons.
  1. You want to be ready for the bad weather. Be sure to find out you need a size exchange before the ice is on the ground.
  2. I can't do free size exchanges for ice cleats that you have used because I can't resell them.
FAQs

What should I do if the length of my shoe or boot is extremely close to the breakpoint of a size range? Should I choose the next larger size? For example, assume the length of your boot or shoe is just under 12½". You look at the specific size chart for ice cleats you're buying. Assume for this example the Medium has a size range of 11½" to < 12½" and a Large is 12½" to < 13" For regular shoes and work shoes, stick with the smaller of the two sizes you're considering. Choose the bigger size if you plan to use your ice cleats on heavier winter boots.

I plan to use the ice cleats on my shoes and boots. But they're different lengths. What should I do?

If the difference in length is small, order the size for the larger boots. Purchase the optional Ankle Strap to use when you use the ice cleats on your shoes. The ankle strap will make sure they stay on. If the difference in length is significant, you may need two sizes of ice cleats. That's because you want the ice cleats to be snug so they stay on your footwear and aligned.

I have a large company. There's no way I can measure everyone's footwear.

I understand. Go by shoe sizes. I'll be happy to exchange sizes later on. However, please make sure you haven't used the ice cleats outdoors.

Is the measuring technique 100% accurate?

Nope. It's accurate most of the time. Measuring is far superior to go by shoe size.

ICE BEAST Ice Cleats Sizing Tips

ICEGRIPS™ Ice Cleats Sizing Advice

Here's my recommended approach to choosing the correct size.

  • First, find the ICEGRIPS™ size that corresponds to your shoe or boot size.
  • Second, measure the length of your footwear in inches and add ¼ inch. Then compare that length to the "Footwear Length in Inches" column in the size chart corresponding to the size you found in the first step.
    • If the length exceeds that size range, even by as little as ¼, select the next larger size.
    • If the length falls below that size range, again, even by as little as ¼, select the next smaller size.

Questions:

What if the measurement I get in the second step above is more than 14.25"?
I would not buy ICEGRIPS™.
Will ICEGRIPS™ fit large, bulky boots?
Yes. A "Bulky Boot" Strap Kit is available at an additional cost.
