Slippery Conditions
Yaktrax Walk and Yaktrax Pro provide improved traction on packed snow and ice. Yaktrax are not helpful in loose snow despite some online demonstration videos you may have seen. That's because ice cleats that provide traction in lose snow require aggressive, self-cleaning treads.
Consider other Ice Cleat options if you walk on steep surfaces, often walk on black ice, or live where temperatures are very low. That's because the SkidLock traction system, while providing hundreds of biting edges, is non-aggressive. You need more aggressive traction in the more extreme conditions mentioned and when ice becomes more dense at extremely cold temperatures. If either of these situations exist, consider Winter Walking HIGH-PRO Ice Cleats or Winter Walking LOW-PRO Ice Cleats.
Which Yaktrax Is Best for You

Yaktrax Walk are Lite-Duty Ice Grips best for routine winter activities like walking from the house to the mailbox, short walks with the dog, and walking from your car to the grocery store.

If your routine activities require that you occasionally walk over rough terrain, like rough stones or other unpaved surfaces. the Pro is the better choice.

Yaktrax Pro Medium-Duty Ice Grips best for some professionals who work outside during the winter and participate in strenuous winter sports. I also recommend Yaktrax Pro for people who take longer, daily walks or hike regularly.

If you are constantly walking on rough terrain consider industrial strength ice cleats.

If you're constantly going in and out of doors or use ice cleats in the city, consider Winter Walking LOW-PRO Ice Cleats. That's because Yaktrax are very slippery on smooth, dry indoor surfaces and on slip hazards unique to cities like sewer grates and utility hole covers.

Elastomer straps, stainless steel wire. They retain their shape and stay flexible at extremely low temperatures so Yaktrax are always easy to put on and take off. The difference in both the thickness of the straps and coils is less dramatic because of improvements made in 2008.

Real rubber compound is tougher and thicker than the elastomer straps used on the Yaktrax Walk. The stainless steel wire is thicker and will last longer in harsher conditions. A new, even tougher material has been introduced for 2011 making thePro20% more durable.

Patented SkidLock Traction Technology
Yaktrax Walk & Yaktrax Pro

Both use the same proven, innovative SKIDLOCK system that gives you hundreds of biting edges in all directions. The quality of traction is the same for both models. The Yaktrax Pro will just last longer especially under tougher conditions.

Ease of Use

There are no special skills to learn and stretch over your regular shoes in seconds. I think the Yaktrax Walk is usually the best choice for elderly people because with the thinner straps it is a little easier to put on. But really, it's not a big deal and many elderly customers buy the Yaktrax Pro and love them.

Like the Yaktrax Walk there are no special skills to learn so you can just walk or even run on packed snow and ice the same way you do on dry payment.

The Pro has Velcro strap (see below) which is another step when you put them on. But if you don't need it you can remove it.

Ability to Stay on Footwear

Most people have very little trouble with Yaktrax coming off their shoes. But in rare instances, most often when the size might not have been the best choice, Yaktrax may come off in deep snow. Most people never have a problem and you shouldn't consider it a problem.

The Yaktrax Walk will fit over almost all your shoes and boots.

Yaktrax Pro has a Velcro Performance Strap that goes across the top of your shoe and helps keep your Yaktrax in place and on your footwear in deep snow. It's only important if you're "pushing off" very hard while working outside or playing sports.

The strap might also be helpful if your routine activities require that you do have to walk through a lot of deep snow since the strap will definitely help to keep your Yaktrax in place. Please remember that you can always remove the strap.

Like the Walk, the Yaktrax Pro will fit over most footwear.

The Yaktrax Walk Toe and Heel Straps are not as substantial as the Pro's.
The Pro's are stronger and help keep them on your footwear more securely. However, the Walk's straps are more comfortable, especially on softer shoes and sneakers.

Yaktrax Pro Size Chart
Note: All Yaktrax tend to run small. If your shoe size is at the top of a size range I recommend getting the next larger size especially if you plan to use them on bulky boots or work shoes.

Yaktrax Walk is available in Black only. Glow (yes, it actually glows in the dark!) and Clear are discontinued for 2019. I still have limited sizes in stock.

Tip: If you have more than one Yaktrax user in the house having different colors is a great way to quickly tell them apart.

Yaktrax Pro is available in Black only because it's a real rubber compound.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between the Yaktrax Walk and the Yaktrax Walker?
There is no difference. Yaktrax renamed the Yaktrax Walker to Yaktrax Walk. It was purely a marketing decision.
Will the Yaktrax Pro give me better traction than the Yaktrax Walk?
No. The only way the Pro's traction is superior to the Walk is that the thicker, stronger straps and Velcro™ Performance Strap keeps the Pro Better aligned on your footwear.
How long Yaktrax last?
Yaktrax are a consumable just like any other article of clothing or ice cleat. How long your Yaktrax Walk lasts depends upon several factors including
  • your weight;
  • how often do you use them; and
  • lastly, how much bare payment you walk on. It's rare that every foot of a sidewalk, parking lot, or road is completely covered with ice and packed snow. It's unreasonable to remove them and then put them back on every time you encounter a dry patch. Bare spots speed up the abrasion on the steel coils because the coils are abrasion resistant, not abrasion proof.
  • Will you be walking over rough surfaces that may tend to cut the rubber straps.

Yaktrax Pro is more durable than the Yaktrax Walk because the Pro has

  • thicker, tougher, real-rubber compound straps compared to the elastomer straps found on the Walk; and
  • 1.4mm diameter stainless steel coils compared to the 1.2mm coils used on the Walk.

Now having said all that on the average you can expect two seasons. When you consider the cost per use it's very low-cost insurance compared to the cost of an injury.

Will Yaktrax eliminate my risk of slipping on ice and packed snow?
No. No traction device can guarantee you won't slip and fall on ice. What Yaktrax can do is significantly decrease the probability that you won't fall to make the risk acceptable.
Do Yaktrax work in deep snow or slush?

No. Look at my Ice Cleats Buyer's Guide to find industrial grade ice cleats that will work in snow and slush.

Winter Walking SPARE SPIKE™ and Winter Walking LOW-PRO are a low cost alternatives for Yaktrax Walk.

Winter Walking HIGH-PRO Ice Cleats are an exciting new alternative to Yaktrax Pro.

Must I remove my Yaktrax every time I go indoors?

You absolutely must remove Yaktrax before going indoors where there are smooth, dry floors like those found in the

  • grocery store;
  • drug store,
  • train station; and
  • post office.

You must remove Yaktrax because Yaktrax are extremely slippery on this type of floor.

If you are not capable of removing them or you are constantly going in and out of doors consider ALTRAGRIPS-LITE LOW PROFILE Ice Cleats sold at SlipResistant.net.

Are Yaktrax good for hiking?

It depends where you're hiking. Yaktrax are not designed to be used off-road.

  • Rough surfaces will cut the straps and abrade the steel coils.
  • The steel coils can be extremely slippery on exposed rocks especially if they're smooth or rounded.
  • Yaktrax should not be worn on sandy or gravel covered surfaces.
  • Frequent non-ice and snow covered surfaces will also affect durability.
Do Yaktrax work on black ice?
I do not recommend Yaktrax for use on black ice because you need more aggressive traction. Consider Winter Walking HIGH-PRO or Winter Walking LOW-PRO Ice Cleats.
I've read that Yaktrax have 10 times more biting edges than spiked ice cleats. Does this mean the traction is 10 times better than spiked ice cleats?
No. The key to traction on ice is penetration. Yaktrax stainless steel coils are non-aggressive. Therefore, traction requires hundreds of biting edges to equal the traction of just one well-designed spike. In addition, the non-aggressive coils become less effective in frigid temperatures when ice is denser.
Will Yaktrax work on Ski Boots?
No. Implus does offer a product called SKITRAX. However, I don't carry them
Will Yaktrax work on Neos® Boots or Bunny Boots?
Will Yaktrax work on roofs?
No. Furthermore the metal on metal contact climbing a ladder would be extremely hazardous Visit Korkers.com to find tractions devices specifically for roofs.
What are WinterTrax?
WinterTrax are manufactured by Implus. They're an ultra-light duty, one-size-fits-all, extremely inexpensive almost one-time use version of Yaktrax. One national marketer sells them as being actual Yaktrax and makes it appear that you're getting a great deal by getting two pair of Yaktrax for the price of one pair from another source. Again, WinterTrax are not Yaktrax. I don't sell WINTERTRAX because they don't hold up and they don't stay on your shoes.
Why are they called Yaktrax?
They're named after the surefooted Tibetan Yak. But the concept really has nothing to do with the Yak. The idea originated by observing how Sherpas would tie strips of leather around their shoes to get traction on ice.

Important Warnings and Safety Tips

Yaktrax Walk will not damage most indoor floors. Nevertheless, you must remove Yaktrax before walking on smooth, dry floors because Yaktrax are extremely slippery on these surfaces.

Do not drive while wearing Yaktrax. The straps can catch on pedals.

I do not recommend Yaktrax for people living or working in cities. Again, Yaktrax are slippery on smooth surfaces that include

  • sewer grates;
  • utility hole covers;
  • flooring in train stations;
  • metallic steps found on buses and trains; and
  • tile, brick, or marble surfaces.
Do not use Yaktrax on surfaces covered with sand or loose gravel.

If you are unable or unwilling to remove Yaktrax Walk before going indoors or driving, or you live or work in a city, consider Winter Walking LOW-PRO Ice Cleats. LOW-PRO and safe to wear on most indoor surfaces and while driving. LOW-PRO also provides better traction on the city hazards mentioned above.
