Shoveling snow is one of the hardest jobs you can ask of an ice cleat. You need traction in the snow and slush you're moving, and on the ice and black ice already underneath it on the driveway, sidewalk, or steps. At the same time, you're pushing, lifting, and twisting, which puts far more force on your footing than ordinary walking.
Every year, I get calls from people who can't find ice cleats that keep them safe while shoveling, especially on sidewalks and driveways with steep inclines or steps. The ice cleats sold in hardware, sporting goods, and department stores, and by most online sellers, are recreational ice cleats. Their makers focus first on keeping costs down. I sell professional-grade Winter Walking ice cleats, built first to prevent slips and falls, then to keep the price as low as possible. When you're shoveling, that difference matters.
No ice cleat can guarantee you won't slip and fall, especially while shoveling steep, icy driveways and sidewalks. What I can promise is that the ice cleats I recommend will do more to reduce your risk than any others I know of. And if you're not 100% satisfied, you can return them for a full refund.
want ice cleats you can put on and take off in seconds
need strong traction on ice, black ice, packed snow, and slush
wear shoes, work boots, or winter boots, but not bulky, insulated pack boots
Why it works for shoveling:
26 molded-in 2mm tungsten carbide studs spread across the sole and heel
Patented Heel Spike grips the moment your heel lands
Self-cleaning tread sheds snow so the studs keep reaching the ice
Dimpled foot bed and strong straps keep it aligned while you push and twist
Just this morning, I was wearing them on my boots as I cleaned 9 inches of snow and ice from my driveway. They provide solid footing, and I have not slipped once on my steep driveway.

Best Economy Ice Cleats for Shoveling Snow
If you only shovel a few times a winter and want to spend less, these two are lighter-duty but still built by Winter Walking. For steep or heavily iced driveways, or if you shovel often, I recommend one of the ice cleats above.
Most of your weight is on one foot. Every stud on that one ice cleat has to be reliable, aggressive, and sharp for the life of the ice cleat.
You'll cross every kind of slick surface in a few minutes: fresh snow, packed snow, slush, ice, and black ice. Your ice cleats need traction on all of them, not just some.
You're constantly pushing, pulling, and twisting. Your ice cleats have to stay on and stay aligned, so the studs remain under your foot.
My top three picks, HIGH-PRO, ICE BEAST™ HIGH-PRO, and ICEGRIPS™, meet all three requirements. Here's what to look for.
Sharp Tungsten Carbide Studs
The smaller a stud's point, the better it penetrates ice. One tungsten carbide stud out-grips the hundreds of edges on a coil-style traction device. Sharpness matters most in frigid temperatures, when ice is harder and denser, and on steps and slopes, where one stud may be all that catches you. Tungsten carbide stays sharp for its entire life and lasts far longer than carbon steel or case-hardened spikes, which dull as they wear. Spikeless and gritted ice cleats lose much or all of their grip on cold, dense ice.
Plenty of Studs, Spread Across the Sole
Many ice cleats bunch their studs in one spot or only around the edge, so they can miss bumpy, uneven ice. Once you start to slip, it's hard for the remaining studs to catch.
2mm Studs and a Self-Cleaning Tread
For walking and everyday use, longer studs grip better, up to 2mm. Any longer and they become a tripping hazard. Stud length matters most when a thin layer of snow covers the ice, which is exactly what you face while shoveling. An aggressive, self-cleaning tread gives you traction in deeper snow and pushes snow out so the studs stay in contact with the ice. Snow build-up is a major weakness of spikeless coil ice cleats.
A Spike Under Your Heel
Your heel hits the ground first on every step. Without a stud there, your foot can shoot out in front of you. Ice cleats without a heel spike force you to walk flat-footed. That isn't natural, so you have to think about it, and you'll forget the moment you move quickly. If your foot slides forward mid-step, no other stud can back it up, so the Heel Spike needs to be a sharp, aggressive tungsten carbide stud.
A Fit That Stays Put
Your ice cleats need to stay on in deep snow, so you don't walk right out of them, and stay aligned while you shovel or run a snowblower. If you'll be in deep, wet snow or making tight turns with a snowblower, add ankle straps.
My top picks may cost twice as much as cheap brands up front. They also grip better and last several times longer.
Then there's the cost of a fall. With today's deductibles and copays, a single trip to the emergency room can cost far more than a pair of ice cleats. Many of my customers come to me after a serious, life-changing injury. They'll be the first to tell you that paying a little more for ice cleats that give you the best chance of staying on your feet is the best investment you can make.

Crucial Ice Cleats Sizing Advice
You can go by the shoe sizes. However, the shoe or boot size can vary significantly for the same foot size. Option two below is a better way to select the correct size.
(OR)
Measure the length of your shoe or boot. Measure the bottom from the tip of the sole to the base of the heel. Measure on "the flat", don't wrap around. We want the length. Then, find the size on the sizing chart with the Footwear Length Range, which spans the length of your footwear. Measure carefully. Measure twice. Our goal is to get you the right size on the first try to make you as safe as possible as soon as possible.
Ice cleats sizes are unisex and fit men's and women's shoes and boots according to the sizing charts.
Always try your ice cleats on when you receive them for two reasons.
You want to be ready for the bad weather. Be sure to find out you need a size exchange before the ice is on the ground.
I can't do free size exchanges for ice cleats that you have used because I can't resell them.
FAQs
What should I do if the length of my shoe or boot is extremely close to the breakpoint of a size range? Should I choose the next larger size? For example, assume the length of your boot or shoe is just under 12½". You look at the specific size chart for ice cleats you're buying. Assume for this example the Medium has a size range of 11½" to < 12½" and a Large is 12½" to < 13" For regular shoes and work shoes, stick with the smaller of the two sizes you're considering. Choose the bigger size if you plan to use your ice cleats on heavier winter boots.
I plan to use the ice cleats on my shoes and boots. But they're different lengths. What should I do?
If the difference in length is small, order the size for the larger boots. Purchase the optional Ankle Strap to use when you use the ice cleats on your shoes. The ankle strap will make sure they stay on. If the difference in length is significant, you may need two sizes of ice cleats. That's because you want the ice cleats to be snug so they stay on your footwear and aligned.
I have a large company. There's no way I can measure everyone's footwear.
I understand. Go by shoe sizes. I'll be happy to exchange sizes later on. However, please make sure you haven't used the ice cleats outdoors.
Is the measuring technique 100% accurate?
Nope. It's accurate most of the time. Measuring is far superior to go by shoe size.
ICE BEAST Ice Cleats Sizing Tips
ICE BEAST Ice Cleats run large. Therefore, if you have a normal winter boot and your shoe size is close to the minimum of a size range, choose the next smaller size. If you have a large, bulky boot, stick with the size chart.
Ice cleats sizes are unisex and fit men's and women's shoes and boots according to the sizing charts.

ICEGRIPS™ Ice Cleats Sizing Advice
Here's my recommended approach to choosing the correct size.
First, find the ICEGRIPS™ size that corresponds to your shoe or boot size.
Second, measure the length of your footwear in inches and add ¼ inch. Then compare that length to the "Footwear Length in Inches" column in the size chart corresponding to the size you found in the first step.
If the length exceeds that size range, even by as little as ¼, select the next larger size.
If the length falls below that size range, again, even by as little as ¼, select the next smaller size.
Questions:
What if the measurement I get in the second step above is more than 14.25"?
I would not buy ICEGRIPS™.
Will ICEGRIPS™ fit large, bulky boots?
Yes. A "Bulky Boot" Strap Kit is available at an additional cost.
Ice Cleat Ankle Straps
Winter Walking Ice Cleats fit securely on most shoes and boots. Most people do not need or use the Ankle Strap. However, Ankle Straps add an additional level of comfort, knowing your ice cleats will stay on your footwear. It's more critical to consider Ankle Straps if you
walk through deep snow (especially wet snow), snow with a crusted surface, or mud because Winter Walking Ice Cleats are so comfortable that you may not notice one is missing until you've traveled some distance or, even worse, slip and fall; or
plan to wear them while you're using a snowblower because of the twisting often required while making a tight turn; and
are a senior citizen or a person with disabilities because retrieving an ice cleat that has come off and putting it back on your footwear might be almost impossible depending on the circumstances.
